Futsal becomes official indoor soccer game of FIFA

January 24, 2009
Why would FIFA name Futsal the official indoor game of soccer? Here are some benefits of playing the game:

Technique

Playing Futsal promotes good technique. The ball is smaller and has less bounce than a traditional football, as a result shooting and passing successfully become more difficult. Players cannot rely on the bounce of the ball to propel it and must strike the smaller ball more accurately to find its centre, and use better technique to propel it with the same power and speed they would a regular football. A Futsal ball highlights sloppy or lazy technique, as a consequence a players technique will become more refined and consistent through necessity of play.

Teamwork

Futsal emphasises the benefits of working as a team and off the ball movement to create space. In Futsal making supporting runs and angles for teammates to create options in attack and defence are fundamental to success.

Touchlines

Futsal uses touchlines like traditional 11 a side football, players cannot use wall passes as a crutch to get themselves out of a bad situation or go past an opponent. Players are forced to shoot more accurately and develop successful attacking play that will give them a realistic chance of scoring as anything other than hitting the target results in lost possession. Defenders and goalkeepers can concentrate on proper blocking angles like the 11 a side game without worrying about the rebound.

Minimal Contact

Futsal is a low contact sport with no sideboards to collide with or players getting pushed into corners as in traditional indoor soccer. This makes it a safe sport for recreation or training purposes with less chance of injury for participants. Futsal encourages players to focus on playing football to be successful, rather than using foul play grey areas or aggression to gain an advantage.

Accumulative fouls

Reinforces the low contact and fair play mentality of Futsal by punishing persistent fouling with an undefended (except for the opposition goalkeeper) free kick.

4 second rule

Players cannot waste time as all kick-ins, corner kicks, free kicks and goal clearances must be taken within 4 seconds. This keeps the game played at a constant high tempo.

PRODUCTS OF PLAYING FUTSAL:

Futsal has a proven track record in football some of the world's greatest football players past and present attribute their skill to playing Futsal. Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka and Robinho to name a few. Futsal is also the reason for Brazil's wealth of world-class footballers and their creative fluent style of attacking football.
